Welcome students, families, faculty, staff, administration and friends! I am honored to be here today to celebrate with all of you.
Northwood University benefits from the multi-cultural perspectives of our international students. Our mission reflects our global perspective and focus on the importance of creating well-rounded leadership… We develop the future leaders of a global, free-enterprise society.
You, students, sitting here today are that future, and I look forward to seeing your personal and professional accomplishments unfold as you emerge from your education to take on the challenges ahead of us.
Education at a university is so much more than the courses offered and the experiences made available. It takes responsibility, accountability, perseverance and dedication to make the most of this experience to learn principles for life.
All of you here today comprise an important, diverse group who contribute to the Northwood difference and help all of us to grow in understanding of the global nature of business.
Through the seven different majors offered here, we will seek to promote your cross-cultural understanding and your business skills beyond just academic accomplishments.
Your experiences will teach you as much as your textbooks, and I encourage you to take advantage of every opportunity to grow and succeed.
Together, we share the common goals of learning, experiencing life and helping to make the world a better place. Your education will help you to develop the vital skills you need to contribute to society professionally, and the basis of ethics and responsibility to help you contribute personally.
Your growth and advancement is a personal endeavor, but one you face as a member of something much greater. Look around you at the network of fellow students, faculty, and your families- all here to help you succeed.
你的成长和进步是个人的努力，但你要取得更大的成功，处理人际关系尤为重要。你的同学，老师和你的家人 — 都是你成功的助力。
We become our best selves through hard work, and that work never ends. We accomplish, and applaud the accomplishments of others. Through service to our communities and dedication to one another, we learn new things about ourselves.
I encourage each of you to always bring your best self to everything you do.Congratulations, and best of luck to those of you starting your journey today! Thank you.
Mr. Paul Brett
Distinguished Guests, Teachers and Students,
I am very pleased to be here at Jilin University-Lambton College for the graduation and commencement ceremonies.
It is a great pleasure to meet with Dr. Ke Tian and our Chinese friends and to bring greetings from Memorial University of Newfoundland. The President of Memorial University, Dr. Gary Kachanoski, is unable to be here, but has asked me to convey his best wishes.
Beyond this, I am very happy to personally congratulate those of you who are graduating today.
Today represents a number of very important milestones in your lives as students. Some of you are just embarking upon a journey, beginning your studies here at Jilin University-Lambton College and are looking forward to a goal of a good job or of further study towards a master’s degree.
It is my hope that some of you will travel to North America to complete part of your studies with us there. As you work towards your diploma, you will find that the time will pass very quickly and before too long, with hard work, you will be ready to graduate.
Some of you have reached that goal and are graduating, finishing both your diploma and degree studies and are now moving on to the next stage in your journey. If you follow the path taken by previous graduates, you may perhaps continue your studies at different institutions either in China or abroad, or find jobs locally or nationally that require both your technical skills and knowledge and your command of the English language.
Since our first technical students enrolled into the program here in 1999, a number have travelled to Canada to complete studies. They are excellent ambassadors for your school. Some have moved on to graduate programs or employment in China, Canada or other countries. A few have started their own businesses. Graduates from Jilin University-Lambton College are a very successful group of people.
Remember: there are no short cuts. The key to success is to keep up with your studies, to work hard, and to persevere. You have a great group of teachers who are dedicated in helping you reach your goals. They provide you the opportunity to learn - the rest is up to you.
As each of you makes your journey, stay in touch with Jilin University-Lambton College, and for technical graduates, remember that you are alumni of the College of the North Atlantic and Memorial University. Speaking for the University, we look forward to your participation in the Memorial University Alumni Association.
So, I wish you the best at the start of this academic year. I hope that new students will learn from the experiences of those who have gone before.
My congratulations once again to the graduates. Well done! You have prepared well for the next step of life and I wish you every success on your journey.
Ms. Hanna Eroglu
Distinguished Guests, Teachers and Students,
On behalf of the Lambton College Board of Governors, president and CEO Judy Morris, and Dean of Business, International Education and Computer Studies, Chris Slade, I would like to thank our distinguished guests, family and friends. To the honourable faculty, we would not be here today without your hard work and dedication. To the staff and administration at Jilin University Lambton College, thank you for all the great work you do. But most importantly, I’d like to thank our 2018 graduating class.
So, here we are. If you think back on your incredible journey that led you to us, you know very well that it was not a very easy one. Some people may have thought you were crazy to complete your studies in a Sino-foreign university and to do so in English. On the contrary, I think you are the bravest group of people I have ever met.
You faced so many challenges. You moved away from home, had to take care of yourself for the first time. You had to study hard in your courses, complete difficult projects, and do many presentations. You were bombarded with homework, assignments, and tests at a pace you may not have been used to. Your initial grades may not have been as high as you expected and the stress of it all got even worse because you were so homesick. Oh how you missed your mom’s cooking and the comforts of home. You may have even regretted coming here.
What you experienced those first few weeks and months is very typical of any college student, Canadian or international. You had to adapt. And, you know what? You did it. You did it successfully, proof, as you are sitting here today, at your graduation.
Your hard work, persistence and diligence afforded you a Canadian credential. Now what? What do you do with your Lambton education and all the things you learned on and off campus? Now where does your journey take you?
努力、毅力和勤奋使你获得了加拿大的毕业证书。接下来会如何? 拥有了莱姆顿的教育背景和在校内外学到知识? 现在的你将往何方?
Wherever you choose to go and whatever you choose to do, remember these 3 important things:
One – Make mistakes. You need to take risk and try new things. Don’t be afraid of thinking and living out of the “box”. By doing things you normally wouldn’t do builds character and can take you on a new and exciting journey.
Two – Never stop learning. Be committed to life-long learning. Be open to what your colleagues and supervisors can teach you. The more open-minded and compatible you are.
Three – Believe in yourself. You are your own brand and only you know you the best. Create a brand that is respected and marketable. Use your skills and smarts to get what you want.
As a Lambton graduate, you take all that you have learned and begin a new chapter in your lives. The opportunities are endless and exciting. I am confident that every one of you will add value to the companies that you will work for and the cities you will live in. Today, you continue your magnificent journey.
In closing, to the Jilin University Lambton College 2018 graduating class, I would like to congratulate you and leave you with a famous quote by Dr. Seuss, the famous children’s author:
You’re off to great places
Today is your day
Your mountain is waiting
So get on your way!
Congratulations and thank you!
